DESCRIPTION:Music Matters: Rêverie ~ Flute & Harp Duo brings flutist Anna Urrey and harpist Kristi Shade to La Grua Center on Saturday\, September 19\, for an intimate chamber concert built around one of classical music’s most naturally complementary instrumental pairings. \nThe hourlong 5 p.m. program travels through music by Claude Debussy\, Gabriel Fauré\, Astor Piazzolla and others\, putting two instruments capable of remarkable delicacy into a room particularly suited to hearing the details. \nBut calling Urrey and Shade simply classical musicians undersells what these two do. \nBetween them are Broadway pits\, Carnegie Hall performances\, major orchestras\, Grammy-winning recordings\, movie soundtracks and collaborations with artists ranging from Audra McDonald and Patti LaBelle to John Legend\, Florence + The Machine and Andrea Bocelli. \nOn Saturday\, all of that experience gets distilled down to two musicians. \nOne flute. \nOne harp. \nAnd an audience sitting only a few feet away. \nRêverie Means Dream\nThe title gives a good indication of where the program is headed. \nThe French word rêverie describes a dreamlike state or pleasant daydream\, and it is also the title of one of Claude Debussy’s best-known compositions. \nDebussy is particularly appropriate for flute and harp. \nThe French composer became a master of musical color\, often treating instruments less as vehicles for big melodies than as different shades of light. Flute and harp appear prominently throughout his work\, including his landmark Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune and late Sonata for Flute\, Viola and Harp. \nIn a flute-and-harp arrangement\, the instruments can almost seem to trade properties. \nA harp note rings and disappears. \nA flute phrase appears above it and hangs in the air. \nThere is no large ensemble to hide behind. \nThat’s precisely the point. \nDebussy and Fauré Put the Program in France\nLa Grua has announced works by Debussy and Gabriel Fauré\, placing part of Saturday’s program squarely within the French tradition that produced some of the finest repertoire for these instruments. \nFauré’s music combines lyrical melodies with subtle harmonic movement\, qualities particularly effective on flute. \nDebussy takes color even further. \nThe duo’s repertoire elsewhere offers an intriguing indication of how deep that connection goes. For a forthcoming Newport Classical appearance\, Urrey and Shade have programmed Debussy’s Rêverie\, Arabesque No. 1 and Clair de lune alongside Fauré’s Fantaisie\, Op. 79. \nLa Grua has not published a complete piece-by-piece program for Saturday\, so those individual works shouldn’t be assumed. \nWhat has been confirmed is the broader musical territory: Debussy\, Fauré\, Piazzolla and more. \nAnd Piazzolla changes the temperature considerably. \nThen Astor Piazzolla Takes the Music to Buenos Aires\nAstor Piazzolla reinvented Argentine tango during the 20th century. \nHis nuevo tango absorbed elements of classical composition and jazz without abandoning tango’s rhythmic and emotional foundation. \nThat makes Piazzolla a fascinating contrast to Debussy. \nThe instruments don’t change. \nTheir personalities do. \nUrrey and Shade have Histoire du Tango in their shared repertoire\, a work originally written for flute and guitar that traces tango’s evolution from its rougher beginnings through the concert hall. \nAgain\, La Grua has announced Piazzolla but hasn’t specified the individual composition\, so Saturday’s exact selection remains to be heard. \nBut the inclusion of his music tells us this won’t be an hour of uniformly hushed\, impressionistic chamber music. \nThere’s rhythm in this pairing too. \nAnna Urrey Has Played From Carnegie Hall to Movie Soundtracks\nFlutist Anna Urrey works across orchestral\, chamber\, contemporary\, film and educational music. \nHer performance résumé includes Carnegie Hall\, David Geffen Hall\, Le Poisson Rouge and National Sawdust\, along with appearances with the International Contemporary Ensemble\, The Knights\, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra\, American Symphony Orchestra\, New Haven Symphony Orchestra\, Mark Morris Dance Company and NOVUS NY. \nShe also spent three summers as principal flute at the Castleton Festival under conductor Lorin Maazel. \nThen there’s the recording studio. \nUrrey can be heard on the soundtracks for Radium Girls\, Little Women and Goodnight Mommy. \nShe also served as principal flute on the Experiential Orchestra’s recording of Ethel Smyth’s The Prison. \nThat album won the Grammy Award for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. \nShe’s Also Shared Stages With Some Very Familiar Names\nUrrey’s career doesn’t stop at the traditional classical boundary. \nShe has performed alongside artists including Audra McDonald\, Patti LaBelle\, Rufus Wainwright\, Jennifer Holliday\, Brian McKnight\, The Irish Tenors\, Jane Birkin and Ólafur Arnalds. \nHer professional work has also included the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. \nBeyond performing\, Urrey is deeply involved in music education. \nShe is a New York Philharmonic Teaching Artist\, a Wm. S. Haynes Collaborative Ambassador and a faculty member at the Marymount School in New York. \nShe earned her master’s degree and Performance Certificate from the Manhattan School of Music after completing her bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University. \nChamber music remains central to her work. \nUrrey is Co-Artistic Director of the Exponential Ensemble\, where performance and educational programming intersect. \nSaturday strips all of that experience down to its most exposed form. \nOne player carrying an entire melodic line. \nKristi Shade Started Playing Harp at Two\nHarpist Kristi Shade got an unusually early start. \nShe began playing the instrument at 2 years old through the Suzuki harp program. \nThat eventually led to a bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and a master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music. \nToday she is Principal Harpist of the Chamber Orchestra of New York\, with which she has recorded multiple albums for the Naxos label. \nShe is also a chamber musician with Hat Trick\, a flute-viola-harp trio\, and Duo Scorpio\, the harp duo she formed with Kathryn Andrews. \nDuo Scorpio has been particularly important to Shade’s work in contemporary music\, commissioning and performing new repertoire for two harps rather than relying exclusively on the instrument’s traditional literature. \nIf You’ve Seen a Broadway Musical\, You May Have Already Heard Her\nShade’s Broadway résumé is enormous. \nHer credits include performances in productions of Wicked\, Ragtime\, Gypsy\, The Notebook\, Sweeney Todd\, Camelot\, Paradise Square\, Carousel\, Hello\, Dolly!\, Doctor Zhivago\, Cinderella\, A Little Night Music and The Apple Tree. \nThose productions put her in orchestras beneath performers including Audra McDonald\, Bette Midler\, Bernadette Peters\, Patti LuPone\, Catherine Zeta-Jones\, Angela Lansbury\, Elaine Stritch and Kristin Chenoweth. \nShe can also be heard on official cast recordings for Anastasia and Goosebumps the Musical. \nAnd her 2026 calendar illustrates how fluidly she moves between musical worlds. \nThis summer alone\, Shade’s schedule included performances of Wicked and Ragtime in New York\, the PAAX Festival in Mexico\, the National Flute Association Convention in Oregon and appearances with the Chamber Orchestra of New York. \nThen comes Stonington. \nFrom John Legend to The Killers\nShade’s work outside Broadway expands the picture further. \nShe has performed with Andrea Bocelli\, John Legend\, Florence + The Machine\, The Killers\, Santana\, Patti LaBelle\, Barry Manilow\, Rufus Wainwright\, Lauren Daigle\, Pink Martini and Itzhak Perlman\, among others. \nHer television appearances include The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon\, Today\, The Late Show with David Letterman and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. \nThat’s a remarkable range for an instrument people sometimes associate almost exclusively with orchestras\, weddings and angels on greeting cards. \nThe modern concert harp can be rhythmic\, percussive\, atmospheric and surprisingly powerful. \nHearing one from a few rows away tends to make that clear very quickly. \nThe Two Musicians Will Meet Again in Newport\nSaturday isn’t a one-off pairing. \nUrrey and Shade are also scheduled to appear together during Newport Classical’s 2026-27 Chamber Series in February. \nThat program gives an unusually useful glimpse at the repertoire the musicians have developed together. \nTheir announced Newport program stretches from Nino Rota and Lili Boulanger to Jules Mouquet\, Fauré\, Debussy and Piazzolla. \nIt moves across different eras and national traditions while exploiting the colors available from flute and harp. \nLa Grua’s Rêverie appears to draw from the same musical partnership\, compressed into a one-hour Stonington performance. \nMusic Matters Was Built for Concerts Like This\nThe concert is part of La Grua Center’s long-running Music Matters series. \nMusic Matters emphasizes chamber\, classical\, early and world music in a setting far removed from a traditional concert hall. \nLa Grua occupies a renovated former industrial building at 32 Water Street in Stonington Borough. \nThe Great Room retains heavy timber\, stone and the proportions of the old structure while functioning as an intimate performance space. \nThere is no distant balcony hundreds of feet from the stage. \nThere is no giant orchestra separating the audience from the individual performers. \nFor a flute-and-harp recital\, that intimacy matters. \nYou’ll hear the breath entering the flute. \nYou’ll see Shade’s hands moving across the strings. \nAnd you’ll hear the physical attack of the harp before the note begins to resonate. \nThat’s chamber music at the scale it was meant to occupy. \nAn Hour Is Enough to Travel Quite a Distance\nThe concert begins at 5 p.m. \nDoors open at 4:30 p.m. \nSeating is unreserved\, so arrival time determines where you sit. \nTickets are $25 and sold primarily online. DESCRIPTION:Concert on the Green: Adam Lomeo & Marcus McLaurine bring guitarist Adam Lomeo and veteran jazz bassist Marcus McLaurine together for their first performance as a duo Friday\, September 18\, on the Stonington Commons Green. \nThe free concert begins at 6 p.m. outside La Grua Center and closes La Grua’s five-concert outdoor season with an hour of jazz standards\, covers and original music. \nIt is an unusually intimate setup for two musicians with careers that stretch far beyond Stonington. \nLomeo has performed at New York jazz clubs including the Blue Note and toured internationally. McLaurine spent three decades playing with legendary trumpeter Clark Terry and has shared bandstands with musicians including Dizzy Gillespie\, Kenny Burrell\, James Moody and members of the Count Basie tradition. \nThere is another connection between them that makes Friday’s pairing particularly interesting. \nLomeo studied with McLaurine. \nFrom Teacher and Student to Duo Partners\nLomeo studied jazz at William Paterson University\, where guitarist Gene Bertoncini was among his teachers. \nMcLaurine has also spent decades teaching bass at William Paterson. \nOn McLaurine’s own website\, Lomeo describes studying with him and learning jazz standards through an ear-training approach that eventually had teacher and student playing the music together and transposing songs through all 12 keys. \nNow they’re taking that relationship onto the stage as a duo. \nLa Grua says Friday will mark their first performance together in that format. \nWithout drums\, piano or a horn section filling the spaces between them\, guitar and upright bass can create one of jazz’s most conversational combinations. \nThe bass doesn’t have to simply provide the bottom of the arrangement. It can answer the guitar\, carry melodies and turn a familiar standard into something much more spontaneous. \nThat should be particularly interesting with these two musicians. \nAdam Lomeo Has One Foot in Jazz and Another in a Much Wider Musical World\nLomeo is a professional jazz and classical guitarist whose playing reaches considerably beyond either description. \nHis repertoire and performance work encompass jazz\, classical music\, bossa nova and pop\, and he plays nylon-string and seven-string guitar in addition to steel-string acoustic and hollow-body jazz guitar. \nHe has performed professionally around the country and in New York jazz clubs\, including the Blue Note\, and has toured in China. \nLomeo also founded Music Dept\, an entertainment company that grew from his earlier Rum Runners Jazz operation. \nThat varied career makes the “covers” portion of Friday’s program particularly open-ended. \nLa Grua isn’t advertising a setlist. \nWhat it is promising is a mixture of jazz standards\, covers and original compositions\, giving the duo considerable freedom to move outside a strictly traditional jazz program. \nMarcus McLaurine Has Played With Some Serious Company\nMcLaurine’s résumé reaches deep into modern jazz history. \nBorn in Omaha\, Nebraska\, he initially played electric bass before an encounter with the sound of upright bassist Roland Haynes sent him searching for an acoustic instrument of his own. \nHis first upright bass cost $150 at a pawn shop. \nThe musical education that followed involved studying the work of Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley while developing his own voice on the instrument. \nAfter serving in the U.S. Air Force and performing with the 590th Air Force Band\, McLaurine moved into the New York jazz world. \nThen came the phone call that changed his career. \nThirty Years With Clark Terry\nIn 1981\, trumpeter Clark Terry needed a bass player. \nMcLaurine was recommended for the job. \nHe initially thought the telephone call from Terry was a prank. \nIt wasn’t. \nMcLaurine joined him for engagements at the Blue Note and in Canada\, beginning a musical relationship that would last approximately three decades. \nTerry was no ordinary bandleader. \nThe trumpeter and flugelhorn player had worked with both Count Basie and Duke Ellington\, performed with generations of major jazz musicians and became one of the music’s most influential educators. \nPlaying night after night with someone like Terry gave McLaurine an extraordinary vantage point on the jazz tradition. \nHis career eventually included performances with Dizzy Gillespie\, Kenny Burrell\, James Moody\, Lou Donaldson\, Abbey Lincoln\, Joe Williams\, Jon Hendricks and the Count Basie Orchestra under Thad Jones. \nHe also performed with Terry at venues including the Village Vanguard\, where Oscar Peterson once joined the group. \nMcLaurine has spent years passing that experience to younger musicians through his work as an educator. \nOne of them was Adam Lomeo. \nJazz Doesn’t Need a Big Stage\nThere is a nice contrast between that history and Friday evening’s setting. \nNo major concert hall. \nNo complicated production. \nJust guitar and bass on a lawn in Stonington Borough. \nThe Stonington Commons Green sits beside La Grua Center at 32 Water Street\, giving the Concerts on the Green series the feeling of a neighborhood gathering rather than a formal jazz performance. \nThat has been the point of the series. \nLa Grua presented five outdoor concerts between May and September this year\, moving through a deliberately varied lineup that included Ed Fast and Conga Bop Supertet\, Amanda Pascali\, the Sean Nelson Jazz Orchestra and Bergin & Sarah before Friday’s finale. \nThe entire series has been offered free to the community with major support from the Stonington Village Improvement Association. \nBring a Chair and Make an Evening of It\nThe practical side of attending is simple\, but there are a few things worth knowing before heading into the Borough. \nSeating opens at 5 p.m.\, one hour before the concert. \nLa Grua does not provide chairs\, so bring a lawn chair or blanket. \nPicnics are welcome. \nOutside alcoholic beverages are not. \nDogs are also prohibited on the Stonington Commons Green. \nRestrooms are available inside La Grua Center during the concert. \nThe performance is expected to run for approximately one hour without an intermission\, making this a compact Friday-evening concert rather than an all-night event. \nParking Is the Part Worth Planning\nAnyone familiar with Stonington Borough probably knows the bigger logistical issue. \nParking. \nThe North Lot at Stonington Commons will be available for concertgoers until it fills.
